Kalgoorlie is definitely not a traditional tourist town. Far off the beaten track, Kalgoorlie is far away from anything! This place made its mark however from gold mining. This traditional outback outpost is home to just thirty thousand people but there are some interesting attractions if you are in the area. First stop on any itinerary should be the Super Pit. This gold mine is probably not on your thoughts as a tourist attraction, however at five hundred meters deep it surely is worth seeing. You can even ring the before you head over and find out what time blasting into the rock is planned! Elsewhere, no goldmining town would be worth its salt without a museum dedicated to mining. Head to the Museum of the Goldfields and check out the city's interesting past - how gold was discovered here is beyond me, but the museum will tell you the story. You can also learn how on earth the city manages to get water to its population in this desert environment. Speaking of which, you could be forgiven for thinking that there are no flowers at all to be seen in Kalgoorlie. However you are mistaken! The Kalgoorlie Boulder is part of the Goldfields Wildflower Trail. This is a trail that extends six hundred kilometers in the direction of Perth and takes you through many wildflower hotspots. From August through to the end of September or even the beginning of October. There are said to be more than twelve thousand species on display in the area, and there are varying itineraries to be taken depending on your area of interest. The visitor center will tell you about the native verities of flowers on offer along the trail, but expect to see the Kalgoorlie Kandy Eucalyptus for sure! It is a beauty!
