Brookwood Cemetery in Woking, UK

The Brookwood Cemetery is partially under the administration of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and the rest is under the ownership of the Woking Borough Council. As the largest cemetery in all of England it is exceptionally well tended. The shear size of it is incredible.

• The trees, shrubs, and flowers are beautifully maintained and the regularly placed military gravesites are in pristine condition.
• The non-military gravestones are individually unique, and some are old enough to have age related damage, or even to have fallen over.
• There is a small military museum on the grounds that glorifies the heroes of the war, but not focusing on the battles or the weapons.
• The military cemetery is divided into the different countries in the commonwealth, whereas the non-military cemetery is divided into areas that segregate by religion.
• This is a lovely place for a walk, but not a place where you are allowed to walk your pet dog. Of course, assistance dogs are permitted.
• Originally there was a branch of the railway that went from Brookwood right into the cemetery itself, with 2 stops within the grounds. The coffin trains would run on these tracks from the platform that was set aside for them from Waterloo. There are still some bits of the old railway that you can spot in the cemetery, but there is no actual track laid down.
