Every year, the city of Brussels is home to the world’s largest flower carpet made up of one million begonias. This massive collection of begonias is only on view for one weekend during Assumption Day on the Grand-Place. The begonia, in all its different colors, is considered to be one of the most perfect flowers by the Belgian people. The national flower of Belgium is the red poppy and looks striking in many Belgian bouquets that also contain the tall spiky Bluebells. In 1831, King Leopold took the Belgian throne in the capital city of Brussels. To commemorate that day on July 21st, he wore on a red poppy, raised a glass of Belgian beer, and celebrated Belgium’s independence from The Netherlands. The people of Belgium love to give flowers as gifts for any occasion, and some of their favorites are the colorful sunflowers and sweet smelling freesias.
