Sueyoshi Park
The large, natural forest in Sueyoshi Park in the city of Naha-shi is a protected sanctuary for wild animals and birds. As a result, the trees, plants, insects and flowers are left to nature as well.
In January, each year, the cherry blossoms flower in a pale pink display of hope for the spring. In the summer, from May to July, stick around until dark by the stream and you will see a spectacle performed by the fireflies from about 7pm until around 8pm.
There are amazing tropical plants on display with palm trees, as well as more typical local varieties of trees like maples and cherry. There are several open spaces if you prefer to be in the direct sun, but the trees do provide lots of shade to hide from the heat of the sun on hotter days.
The park itself is not hugely popular with tourists nor locals. It is quiet, except for some distant traffic noise so you can take your time and relax. A hike to the northern end of the park will take you to a small shrine if you want to see that.
Since the park is on the hill there is a good view of upper Naha. Sit and watch as the Yui monorail trains are passing by, check out the cherry trees as they flower, or just gaze at the nearby city skyline and have a rest in the shade of a palm tree.
