El-Mahalla El-Kubra

Egypt is not very well known for its natural flowers, or planted gardens or much of anything that grows wild or cultivated. It is not that they don’t grow anything at all. Right in the middle of the River Nile Delta there is a bustling city called El-Mahalla El-Kubra, or you can call it El Maḥalla, for short. This is a large agricultural and industrial city of over half of a million people, on the west bank of the Damietta Branch tributary of the Nile. This is known as textile country.

Even so, they grow, and even export some clover, caraway seeds, sorghum, sunflower seeds, fennel, cumin seeds, dried mint, corn, maize and many types of agricultural seeds as well.

Egypt has an extraordinarily long history of tourism. The ancient Greeks and ancient Romans were the first tourists in ancient Egypt. They came to see the pyramids, just like modern tourists do. Later, in the colonial days, Napoleon and the British came to steal the many Egyptian treasures for their museum collections. The Egyptian collections around the world in museums now has created a trend for tourism in Egypt because people want to come to see for themselves, right at the source. El-Mahalla El-Kubra is that source.

The most famous of the tourist attractions are still the ancient monuments, madrassas, pyramids and the mosques. Modern tourists are also able to come and marvel at the prehistoric rock art, monasteries, sand dunes, ancient fortresses. What is most unusual though is that most people never consider the fact that there are also fantastic tropical fish and incredible coral reefs to see. You can watch the reefs bloom like flowers under water on a grand, new, modern adventure to visit El Mahalla El Kubra in the not so very ancient Egypt.
