The list that is not so great to be on is the Most Deprived Towns in England. That’s the list that Oldham is on. In fact it is the top of the list, or the bottom, depending on how you look at it.

Good Things Like Flowers in Oldham

There are good things in Oldham. There is a £37m cinema currently in the process of being built. There is a lovely brand new centre for sports. And the flowers are incredible, which you can see from the several Britain in Bloom winning displays around town. There are more than 30 green spaces and parks in town and a nice new tram system, too. There is more to the town of Oldham than you might think.

Low Wages Are the Problem

The world class Mahdlo Youth Zone facilities for children and teens are available for 50p. Unfortunately, that is still too much money for many of the parents. They can’t even afford that much. Oldham companies pay some of the very lowest wages of anywhere in the UK, and the very lowest in the Greater Manchester area based on the statistics for more than a decade. The commercial buildings show how Oldham got onto this list. Even the Disney Store has been empty for more than ten years. The market is empty, except for the car park.

The Gardens Tell a Different Story

The people in Oldham may be paid less than other people in the country. They may even find that their children are not able to access the facilities as often as they want. They may even find they have to travel out of town to make some specific purchases. All that is true, but still the residents of Oldham are proud of their town. How do we know this? Check the flower gardens. There are so many Britain in Bloom display winners that we know that there may not be much hope for some, but there is still a lot of pride in Oldham.
