The Aswan Botanical Garden is located on an oval-shaped, tiny island in the Nile River. The island itself is not even a kilometre long and less than half a kilometre wide. The whole island is the park. This is where exotic, unusual subtropical plants and trees were planted as part of a collection by Lord Kitchener of the UK.
One of the local favourites is the Royal Palm, also known as the Cuban or Florida Royal Palm. The Roystonea regia, its scientific name, is mostly used for decoration but the leaves make a good source for thatch, and the wood can be used for construction. The park is a favourite among local Egyptians who travel to the island on a felucca, which is a traditional sail boat. These wooden sail boats are specially designed to sail in the protected waters like those in the Nile River. With 10 passengers, and 2 or 3 crew members, tourists can travel to the park quietly, enjoying the views and the ride.
