The Sampaguita and the Balayong cherry tree are both found in Malolos, Bulacan.
As the Philippine’s national flower, the Sampaguita is planted nationwide. Its scientific name is Jasminum sambac, and it is known for its fragrance. There is a Filipino legend where the name ‘Sampaguita’ came from. It is from the phrase “Sumpa kita!” or “I swear/vow/promise!” This flower originally came from India, Bhutan, and Pakistan. It blooms all throughout the year in the country. Indonesia shares it with the Philippines as it’s national flower as well. The Balayong tree is known as the Philippine Cherry tree. It is native to the province of Palawan but has found its way all over the country including Malolos. The Cassia nodosia, its scientific name, blooms from April to September. It can reach up to 20 meters. Its flowers can have colors varying from white, pale pink, and pink. There is a park in Palawan lined up with Balayong trees patterned after the parks in Japan that also has Yoshino cherry trees.
