Flower lovers will have plenty to do in and around Tempe. Serious fans of flowers, shrubs and plants absolutely need to head the one hour west to Phoenix to check out the Desert Botanical Garden. At almost 50 acres, the garden is Arizona’s finest example of local botany. With all you need to know to experience the desert’s finest collection of cacti, flowers and much more, it is a great place to head to in order to absorb the flavor of the region. There are a massive 20,000 flowers and plants in this open air museum-come-garden and the Desert Discovery Trail is perhaps its’ best feature. Keep your camera with you to photograph stunning cacti and other desert plants on the way round the route. There is also a lovely desert wildflower trail, and an interesting Centre for Desert Living. There is plenty to do here to keep the kids entertained too, with activities for the kids as well as guided tours for grown-ups.
Located outside of Phoenix, Tempe is smack bang in the middle of the desert but also has a lakeside vibe thanks to Tempe Town Lake. The lake itself serves as a cultural hub, with festivals, tours and other events taking place throughout the year. The local brewery is also an interesting place to visit if you wish to learn a bit about the brewing process, and the Tempe Centre for Arts is open to visitors wishing to take part in open mic night or perhaps just sit back and listen. If you are travelling with kids then perhaps you will want to take them somewhere fun in Tempe. The Sea Life Arizona aquarium is a great place to start, with a great selection of sea life, and if you have older kids or just love a bit of the unusual why not take a Segway tour around the lake?
