Bryansk as a city with an illustrious past is proud to welcome all its visitors. This administrative center of the same name region with the population of 405 000 is a busy transportation hub and is especially famous in the CIS countries as a major railway juncture.
The initial name of the settlement was ‘Debryansk’ which originated from the old Ukrainian word ‘Debri’, or ‘an impenetrable forest’. Muscovy managed to defeat the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Rus and Samogitia and conquered Bryansk in 1503. Since then, it became a trading center with its economy based on trade and frequent fairs. The city was heavily damaged during the WWII.
It is not difficult to guess that the centerpiece of the Bryansk region remains forests. The Bryansk Forest Nature Reserve, or Bryanskiy Les, covers the territory of 12 189 ha. Founded in 1987 not far from the border with Ukraine, it became a bigger consistent part of the local UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. There are not many unique varieties mentioned in the Red Book. However, what makes this place second to none is its diversity. For example, you can find here all ten species of European woodpeckers.
But there is a plant that can be found in the reserve especially easily. Drosera rotundifolia, commonly known the sundews, is always brought into sharp focus by visitors, regardless of age. Do you wonder why? That’s because of its being a carnivorous plant. Attracting sugar-loving insects unremittingly, they exude a thick fluid to capture and digest their prey.
The flowers of Drosera are held above the leaves, being physically isolated from its traps. The sundews are so highly adapted that they don’t need strong roots to gather nutrients. Instead, the roots simply keep them. On top of that, their lethal speed can be faster than a leopard at full gallop.
So, be sure that the National Reserve Bryanskiy Les is interested in everything – starting from one plant and ending with the whole ecosystems!
