Right in the heart of the city of Takamatsu-shi the Ritsurin Garden has become a popular tourist attraction for local Japanese tourists and international tourists alike. The landscaping is designed as a circuit, specifically for walking the paths to experience the flowers and the rest of nature. It was built during the Edo era in 1603 to 1868. As a backdrop, Mount Shiun adds a grand element that expands the gardens to appear even greener.
The traditional style Japanese garden provides a foundation for the typical, yet beautiful flowers most commonly found in classic gardens in the area. Koi are grateful for all the food the tourists feed them in their scenic ponds. Full of poppies, water lilies, Japanese lilacs and azaleas in the springtime, April is an exceptionally nice month to spend time in the park.
The circuit takes about an hour to walk at a leisurely pace, so a few rest stops are often most welcome, especially in warmer weather. There is a lovely classically styled thatched Japanese house with a garden designed for a nice cup of tea. The rest house has more variety for food and there are several smaller tea rooms throughout the park, so take your pick. Choose which scenery you like and rest awhile in that area, or take all afternoon and rest in several different spots, and add an audio tour which are available in 8 different languages.
