It is not every location that truly classic traditional formal gardens are exactly what suits, but at Raby Castle, just outside of Middlesborough they are really perfect. The formal pleasure flower gardens and the small kitchen garden set off the lovely castle, owned by Lord and Lady Barnard.
The south facing gardens gently slope, but extend only 5 acres now, as they have less land available now than in the 1700s when they were planned for the second Earl of Darlington.
The walls were fabricated by hand and specially designed so they could be heated in order to support sub-tropical fruit trees like apricots and nectarines. Over the years these trees have been lost, but there is still a common white fig tree gives fruit every year while it lives in a custom built house. This gives new meaning to the term “tree house”!
The grounds have changed a lot in terms if what plants and flowers and trees are planted, but there are some original yew hedges, and an ornamental pond that used to be used to irrigate the vegetable garden. The spectacular formal lawns and rose gardens offset the just as striking informal conifer and heather garden.
Take special note of the Tulip Tree, the Wedding Day Rose and the Rosa Moyserii among the irises, magnolias, lavender, maple trees, azaleas, rhododendrons, classic roses, water lilies, and the colourful spring bulbs. You will not be sorry. This is a special treat for flowers in Middlesbrough.
