No one is really sure how the capital of Bangladesh got its name, but the hidden city of Dhaka is fully of mystery and wonder. The country has a brief and bloody history, beginning with its separation from India and English colonial rule and ending with the country’s separation from Pakistan. The Liberation War Museum is located in central Dhaka, and stands as a living reminder to the small nation’s turbulent beginnings. The Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts is also located in central Dhaka in the Parliament building and is actually an exquisite Bengali café that serves guests local dishes including prawn curry. Old Dhaka should be visited on foot, so visitors can see the ornate architecture and visit the open aired markets. Colonial mansions can also be found in the oldest section of the city. The river Buriganga runs through the capital and the banks near Sadar Ghat is the absolute best spot for tourists to take a leisurely boat ride up the river. Dhaka is also home to one of the region’s largest flower market Shahbag. Here shoppers can find hundreds of stalls selling both native and imported flowers and plants. Dhaka is known for their beautiful magnolia trees, and there is no place better suited to see them than in the Bangladesh National Botanical Gardens. Located in Dhaka, visitors can also see the bright yellow blooms of the trumpet vines, and even a large rose garden. Residents of the city also love to start their own rooftop and courtyard gardens, giving visitors a glimpse of some of the tiny nation’s diverse plant life. The shrub like Allamanda is popular in many Bengali gardens, along with bright red tulips in the springtime. Water lilies and other aquatic plants are also common in Dhaka gardens, and we will be happy to deliver these and other beautiful floral arrangements to almost any address in Bangladesh.
