As not only the capital of Belgium, but also the de facto capital of the European Union, Brussels is a city that seems to never sleep. The capital of Belgium sits in the heart of Europe, and is full of museums, antique shops and the famous Belgian Comic Strip Center. Comics have become such a strong influence on the city’s culture that an entire museum has been dedicated to it. La Sablon is also located in downtown Brussels, and is home to some of Europe’s most exquisite antiques. No one can visit the city without trying some of the local beer, and the best place to try some is Moeder Lambic. A favorite local bar, they also serve a variety of Belgian cheeses and quiches. Visitors to Brussels in the springtime can enjoy the fields of blooming tulips in the Vredehop Tulip Garden, which has over 200 different varieties of tulips. Daffodils and hyacinths can also be found among the garden paths. Cherry trees can be found blooming throughout the capital city, from in front of the Parliament House to the Parc du Cinquntenaire. Springtime also means that the royal family opens their Royal Greenhouse to the public for a few weeks. Here visitors can walk among the delicate pink and red bleeding hearts, and several different orchid species. Large azalea bushes and bright geraniums can also be found blooming in the Royal Gardens. For visitors who miss the springtime opening of the Royal Greenhouse, the National Botanical Gardens of Belgium can give visitors a glimpse of native plant life, and several exotic plant species from around the world.
