It is not hard to see why the ancient seaside city of Catania is a popular destination for tourists or why it has been continually inhabited for centuries. It has a warm and sunny climate that not only makes the city a great place to live, but it is also ideal for growing a number of native plants and flowers. Its location on the east coast of Sicily has also made it easy for a number of imported flowers to be brought in over the years. Mt. Etna has made the soil exceptionally fertile at the base of the volcano and here one can find vineyards, olive groves and a number of orchards and citrus plantations. When the fruit trees are in bloom the area around the volcano’s base is surrounded in pink and white flowers. In the city’s small private gardens one will be able to see a variety of roses, along with daisies, carnations and an assortment of daylilies. Gladioli are also popular with residents, and giant purple and white alliums can also be found growing. Other popular flowers with residents include bougainvillea, wisteria and trumpet lilies. Visitors to Catania can find these and other flowers for sale in many of the city’s open air markets along the coast.
