In the northern part of the country one can find the city of Padua, which is famous for its 13th century St. Anthony Basilica. Quaint cafes can be found on the city streets and most have colorful baskets and pots of local flowers. Begonias, petunias and pansies are common, along with gerberas. If there is a pot of mums out front be sure to stop and pay your respects since this is the only time these colorful flowers are used in Padua. During the Lenten and Easter season white trumpet lilies and palm leaves are common, and some of the local greenhouses even have exotic orchids for sale. The Orto botanico di Padova is proud of its heritage, which dates back to 1545. Inside the botanical garden one can find over 7,000 species of plants and flowers. Along with giant lily pads, one can see a variety of orchids, along with succulents and blooming cacti. The entrance into the botanical garden and greenhouses is designed to guide visitors through the carefully planned flower beds. Roses, coneflowers, daisies and trinomas can be found, along with ti leaves and elephant ears. Oleanders and bougainvillea also bloom outside, and in the spring the cherry trees burst into bloom.
