Since the city of Dortmund is considered the cultural center for the eastern Ruhr area it shouldn’t be surprising to learn that it is also home to several parks and gardens. Along with the numerous breweries that are located in town, one can also find the Florianturm and Rombergpark. The large park is partially forested which adds to its secluded feeling, and it also showcases some of the trees and plants native to the area. Over the years several greenhouses and an arboretum have been added which contain a large number of native and imported plants and flowers. Camellias and trailing white star jasmine are common sights, especially in the spring and summer. The herb greenhouse also contains medicinal plants, some of which are still used to treat a variety of illnesses today. Roses can also be found throughout the city, along with daisies, gladioli and mini carnations. In the cooler spring months tulips, crocuses, snowdrops and edelweiss are common sights in both city and public gardens. Tech and flower lovers will both enjoy the Florianturm which was named after the patron saint of gardeners and also pays tribute to all of the technological advances that has made life a little easier.
