Saint Etienne is a large city in eastern central France in the Massif Central 55 km from Lyon.
While its not necessarily a town which attracts many visitors it still has some attractions which are well worth a visit. The town is centred around a pleasant square called Place Jean Jaurres with statues, fountains and a charming band stand. Buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries form part of a pedestrianised area with shops, restaurants and bars. Le Musee d’Art et ‘Industrie will help to understand the industrial history of St Etienne while Musee des Verts will enthral sports enthusiasts with its many exhibits purporting to this premier league football team. Not to be missed is the modern art museum where collections by Leger, Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet can be viewed. You’ll be disappointed if you’d hoped to find architecture of great historical importance but the Grand Eglise is fairly rustic with its’ gothic style. Dotted here and there throughout the city are some very pleasant parks and gardens with Montaud Park being the largest. Slightly further afield for those interested in hiking be sure to visit Parc du Pilat situated just south of Lyon. Along the trail you will discover the wonderful flora and fauna of the area including apple orchards with their pink and white blossoms and fields of wild poppies adorning the way.
