The port city of Geelong is a nature lover’s paradise. Along with water parks, beautiful beaches, open air markets and there are plenty of scenic gardens. Balyang Sanctuary is a great place for joggers, and they can also catch a glimpse of some of the area’s native plants and animals. Thirteenth Beach allows golfers to enjoy a game and a view of the water, and Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park is known for its fabulous diving. Serendip Sanctuary is the perfect place for birdwatching and to see small woodland orchids and anthuriums in bloom. There are also several varieties of ferns growing in the sanctuary. You Yang is not only filled with bike trails, but the meadows burst into color in the spring and summer. Colorful prickly pear grow on the craggy mountainside and bright yellow canola blooms in the nearby fields. To truly see a large assortment of the native plants and flowers one needs to pay a visit to the Geelong Botanical Gardens. Here towers of petunias bloom surrounded by vinca and pentas. One section of the gardens are devoted entirely to roses, where there are even some stunning striped hybrids growing. Hostas, asters and anemones are other flowers commonly used in the garden’s displays.
