INFOINFOINFOINFO

One of the main bases for the Italian navy and an important port city, Taranto is also home to several beaches and gardens. Along the coast one can see a variety of native flowers burst into bloom in the spring, which includes daisies, carnations and even the small “love in the midst” blooms. Inside the city there are several parks and private gardens where residents love to cultivate roses and other flowers. Gladioli are a particular favorite among city residents, along with cosmos and coreopsis. The warm coastal weather in the summer is ideal for giant allium and the smaller globe flowers. Pansies and petunias are often found blooming in pretty pots, and many of the city’s shops and restaurants use these flowers as a way to welcome customers inside. Tiger and daylilies can be seen blooming in the summer, and during Easter the large trumpet lilies are often used as decoration or given as gifts and offerings. The coastal climate and sandy soil near the beach is also ideal for heather in the spring. Red and blue salvia are other favorites, and are often mixed in flower beds with tall astilbe. Many of these and other favorite local flowers can also be found for sale in the busy markets in Taranto.
