The second largest city in Northern Germany, historic Bremen is also home to a large number of flowering plants. Many of these flowers can be found growing in public and private gardens. In between the beer and science museums and institutions one can find quiet parks and green spaces to relax in, and a favorite with visitors and residents is Park Bremen. This large park and botanical garden is currently home to over 550 species of rhododendrons that include an estimated 2,500 varieties of these flowering bushes. With some older rhododendron bushes reaching up to 12 feet it is a stunning sight in the late spring and early summer when the shrubs are in bloom. The botanical gardens are also home to a large number of native and imported flowers which include roses, daisies, an assortment of lilies and the delicate white edelweiss which is always seen as a sign that springtime is near when it starts to bloom. Behind the rhododendron bushes visitors can also see many of the trees and forest plants that are native to the region, and in the milder months one can occasionally see white, pink and red anthurium peaking out around the native ferns.
