The city of Engels was founded in 1747 on the left bank of the Volga. But at first, it was just small settlement Pokrovskaya Sloboda, which served as a transshipment point for salt transportation. It was mined on Lake Elton. And in 1894 the Pokrovsk-Ural railway was built, and Pokrovskaya Sloboda turned into one of the largest, at that time, market. Grain, salt, and oil in huge quantities were purchased in the Pokrovskaya Sloboda and were transported practically throughout the country. In 1914 Pokrovskaya Sloboda received the status of the city and was renamed to Pokrovsk. And in 1931 Pokrovsk was renamed in honor of the communist leader Friedrich Engels. The vegetation world of the city and its surroundings is very diverse. Right outside the city you can find wild pears and apple trees, mountain ash, steppe cherry, dog rose, spindle grass and thorn.
