A mere 45 minute express train journey from Paris the city of Reims is probably best known for being the capital of the Champagne region. However if champagne tasting is the only reason for your visit you will undoubtedly miss out on a cultural experience which is second to none. The cathedral of Notre Dame which towers majestically above the city is most impressive with hundreds upon hundreds of statues on the West front. This 800 year old gothic feat of architecture has seen the coronation of no less than the coronation of 25 sovereigns. There is plenty of choice when it comes to restaurants and eateries in Reims, some smart and chic with others being more relaxed and informal. The boulevards are lined with art deco buildings and the pedestrian square of Place Drouet D’Erlon is lively and vibrant and is a great place to grab a seat and simply watch the world go by. Head to the Reims Mountain Regional Nature Park for some down time where Verzy forest is home to a protected species of dwarf beech tree and marvel at their strange and interesting shapes. There are wild orchids to be seen in abundance as the walker alternates between forest and vineyards.
