Known for fashion and art, Dusseldorf is a fascinating mix of medieval and modern architecture. In between 13th century churches and castle towers, one can also find high end boutiques and art galleries. Located along the Rhine River the area is also ideal for growing a number of native plants and flowers which can be found growing in public and private gardens. Roses are a favorite with residents and there are several varieties that thrive here, including a number of hybrids and fragrant teas. Climbing roses are also gaining in popularity, and one can find them growing up trellises throughout the city. Daisies, mums and tall gladioli are also popular in gardens, and many of the city’s boutiques and shops have these flowers growing in pots out front. During the Karneval or Fifth Season the city streets and nearby Rhine River come alive with festival lights, parades and flowers. The main celebration occurs on Rose Monday and it is hard to find a place or resident in the city without one of these flowers, and its end on Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lenten Season and when the lilies start to appear. By Eastertime the city is filled with fragrant white lilies, along with trumpet, day and even tiger lilies.
