Southern Italy is home to Reggio di Calabria, often referred to simply as Reggio by locals. Its warm climate and coastal location also makes this city ideal for growing several types of native and imported flowers. Like all of Italy roses are a special favorite, and it is hard to find a garden without at least one variety being carefully tended. Each color has a special meaning, and residents frequently use roses as a way to show their feelings. While mums are rarely seen, it is hard to miss the daisies, carnations and pansies. Wavy petunias are often grown in baskets and used as outdoor decorations in front of homes and businesses. Along with the palm trees many of the city’s public building boast their own small gardens that often change with the season. Caladiums, asters and cosmos are popular, along with astilbe and purple coneflowers. Dahlias grow in the cooler months, and tulips can be seen in the springtime. Clematis, bougainvillea and geraniums are other favorites, and one can even find a few sago palms and giant agave cacti growing in the city and on the sandy beaches.
