At the edge of the national forest and by the River Soar one will find the small city of Leicester. The ancestral home of Lady Jane Grey is located here, and it has been turned into an 830 acre park that visitors can spend the day wandering through. Now known as Bradgate Park and while there may not be established gardens here the fields and landscape has changed little over the centuries. Charnwood Forest lies at the edge of the city and one can wander along the shaded paths, but if you want to see an English Garden one should pay a visit to Belgrave Hall. Belgrave Hall and Gardens was once the home of a prosperous 18th century merchant, and now visitors can stroll along the garden paths. The green manicured lawns lead visitors up to the rose bushes, where begonias and salvias are mixed in. Other flowers common in the area include lavender and tall hollyhocks. Althea or Rose of Sharon is another common sight, especially in the late spring and early summer. In the fields around the city wildflowers bloom during the warmer months which includes daisies, cone flowers and mini carnations. The cooler weather is also ideal for violets, and many of the small purple flowers can be found blooming at the forest’s edge.
