Not a traditional tourist destination, Killeen still has some interesting things to do. There is a good planetarium here, as well as some stunning cliffs off which you can do some bouldering, and a climbing centre. The area around Killeen offers some excellent flower viewing spots too for those who love to see flowers. Of particular interest in the Killeen Community is the Killeen Municipal Court Garden. This project, set up by the local community in cooperation with the government, is a real rehabilitation opportunity for young offenders. Boasting lovely native flowers and shrubs, including cacti and well-tended flower beds, the garden gives those who need a second chance the opportunity to learn some new skills and to create something of which they can be proud. From growing fruit and vegetables to delivering to homeless shelters to planting beautiful flowers, the gardens provide a real opportunity for some of the local youths under the watchful care of well-seasoned gardeners who are happy to pass on their advice. Those wanting to see a Botanic Garden in Killeen need to head a little further afield to Austin to get their formal plant fix – here, visit the Zilker Botanical Garden and take in the tranquil setting amongst the ponds, flowers and shrubs.
