Nestled at the foot of Monte Retaia in Tuscany is the city of Prato where the biscotti biscuit,loved for dipping in a good cup of coffee, was born.Find out more about this crisp cookie by paying a visit to the shop where they were first created. Discover more of the city’s history in the Palazzo Pretorio where works by artists such as Donatello, Giovanni da Milano and Alessandra Allori are on display. Wander through the piazzas taking in the architecture of the various churches and other buildings of historical interest until a large white marble statue known as Forma Squadrata Con Taglio indicates the point where old meets new. Beyond the walls of the old city is China town which is not surprising as there is a population of some 45000 ethnic Chinese living in Prato. There are shops, restaurants, nail bars, hairdressers and a buzz of life in this part of town. Escape for a while to one of Prato’s lovely parks. Enjoy the classic Italian styled garden of Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano and Park with its lake and lemon trees. Head to nearby Florence to see a wonderful display in the Iris garden in honour of the coat of arms of Florence. The emblem of this city is a scarlet lily on a white field known as fleur de Lis.
