Modern Asyūṭ lies in an area of Egypt where agriculture is the main source of income for the population. Lentils, vegetables, grains and cotton form the foundation for the economy of the region now.
In ancient times, the region hosted battles between the 10th and 11th dynasties around 2130 to 1939 BC. It was then that flowers were chosen to have symbolic meanings, often using ancient Egyptian religious connections.
The goddess Isis, who was believed to have magical powers, protected the kingdom of ancient Egypt from its enemies. She governed both the natural world, and the skies above, and was believed to influence fate. The water lily, or lotus flower, were considered to be sacred to Isis so the ancient and modern Egyptians alike include these in their flower arrangements.
Large vases of flowers are common decorations in modern Egypt. Ancient ruins shows that the practice of filling large vases with flowers is not a new idea. Wall paintings dating from before the Asyūţ regional battles depict roses and other flower decorations.
