Just outside the ancient city of Alexandria, lies the town of Kafr ad Dawwār. As an industrial town it sits on a major agricultural throughway from Alexandria to the capital city of Cairo. The city’s industrial base is made up of textiles like cotton and silk, and chemicals, such as paint.
Outside the city the rural areas are rich with fertile lands growing all types of agricultural products, including cotton and the flowering bush called the holy rose of Abyssinia. The rose grows in sandy, well drained soil, and full sun so it thrives in the Kafr ad Dawwār area.
The holy rose of Abyssinia are climbing semi evergreen shrubs with thorny stems, pinnate leaves and delightful clustered or solitary, 5 petalled flowers. Once the summer flowering season is over the rose hip fruits are a distinctive purple or red.
The irrigation to the farms and gardens comes from the stream of Mahmodya, coming from north of Kafr ad Dawwār towards Alexandria. It is this irrigation that keeps the flower gardens of Kafr ad Dawwār blooming.
