The semi industrial town of Sūhāj, which is often also spelled Sohag or Sawhāj is located in Upper Egypt in the Nile River valley. There are production facilities for cotton, including the textile weaving, as well as food processing plants.
The cotton grown in the region is highly valued around the world. Egyptian cotton is some of the highest quality anywhere. About a month after being planted the cotton plants start to grow branches. After 2 months the first signs of squares show up. The blooms happen soon after that. The flowers start out as a creamy white. After being pollinated, they turn pink. Then the flowers turn into the cotton bolls, which soon become the cotton balls. It takes about 4 months to grow cotton.
The town of Sūhāj is an indicator if the great pride the Egyptian people take in their heritage of the great pharaohs of ancient Egypt. It was these pharaohs who first developed the agricultural techniques to produce food, and cotton and flowers in the area.
