Al Fayyūm is one of Egypt’s oldest cities. The oasis created by the depression in the desert has created an ability to farm the area without extensive irrigation like as necessary in most of the rest of the country.
By the Twelfth Dynasty, the Romans were relying on the agricultural products grown in the Al Fayyūm area. Additionally, the Rosa centifolia, or cabbage rose, has been widely grown in the oasis. The flower petals are used to make rose oil because of the sweet, clear aroma that has been described as having light notes of honey by connoisseurs.
The essence of the aroma can be extracted using a steam distillation process. The rose absolutes use a solvent extraction system, which is more common now in the perfume industry. Roses are expensive, yet still the rose essential oil is the most frequently used natural aroma used in the perfume industry.
The oasis at Al Fayyūm, with a waterfall and rose flower gardens is only about a 2 hour drive from Cairo.
