Helwan, previously a suburb of Cairo, is now a city unto itself with almost 3/4 of a million inhabitants. On the bank of the Nile River, Helwan has desert temperatures similar to those in Cairo, but the humidity and average temperature range is somewhat greater. Many people find Helwan to be more comfortable, so it has become a popular winter get away from the capital. Natural bathing springs and flower gardens abound. With the altitude at 40 meters above sea level Helwan delivers far more comfortable temperatures all year round.
In 1917, Zulfaqar Pasha, and Egyptian architect built The Japanese Garden in Helwan. These gardens were dedicated to the ruler of Egypt at that time, Sultan Hussein. This classic, traditional Japanese garden features several levels of fish ponds, hills, canals, and stones, just as it would were it in Japan. Some of the flowers have been changed since the weather is different, but the impression of the gardens remains entirely classical in the Japanese Tradition.
