The city of Mallawi may be off the beaten track for the majority of visitors to Egypt, but there are several attractions of note that would be worth a visit for those travelling through the area. The area is known for its ancient Egyptian history and the Mallawi Museum is host to thousands of interesting pieces that go back as far as 3500 years. Also in Mallawi you will find the temple at Tuna el-Gebel which hosts a mummy, beautiful paintings and the tomb of Petosiris. Mallawi is located a 3 hour drive from Cairo, and is best visited as part of an organised tour that takes in several attractions. If Cairo is your base and you would like a break from the desert atmosphere you experienced in Mallawi, then head to the International Park which has some lovely flowers and lush greenery. Elsewhere, the Al Horreya Garden offers shade under its glorious palm trees and well-manicured lawns. A worthwhile trip if you fancy it is a journey over to Gezira Island right in the middle of the Nile and accessible by bridge. The island features a well-known Garden of Plants and is a beautiful place in which to seek shade.
