Erfurt is a slow-moving city nestled in the central German state of Thuringia. The city is well known since it is home to the Cathedral of St. Mary, which can be dated back to the 8th century and is also the site of Martin Luther’s ordainment. The city also consists of the Augustinerkloster, a monastery where Martin Luther lived a part of his as a monk. Luther himself is known to describe the people of Erfurt as “Gardeners to the Holy Roman Empire”. You can find multiple medieval houses and shops around the Krämerbrücke bridge, stretching over the Gera River.
Across the bridge is one of Europe's earliest surviving synagogues, simply named as the Old Synagogue. The Erfurt Treasure in it consists of 60 pounds of gold, silver, and jewels that were all once owned by a wealthy local Jew along with an intricate golden wedding ring from the early 14th century.
Erfurt is also widely popular for its horticultural history, which is the main point of interest for several visitors. The city has been dealing in this industry since the 19th century when local businessman Christian Reichart began cultivating flower and vegetable seeds. Today, the city is famously nicknamed as “The Garden City” or the “City Of Flowers” around the world.
A visit to the Kakteen Haage cactus nursery will, without doubt, be an interesting encounter where you can find an enormous selection of cacti with some of Europe's oldest cactus species.
However, most of Erfurt’s floral wealth can be found at The Dendrological Garden, established in 1959 for research purposes. It's located between Luisenpark, Steigerwald forest and egapark.
The garden has a colourful variety of the Rosaceae (rose family) and indigenous cherry blossom trees. It also has spaciously refreshing terraces, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing evening.
