Katuray, Bitaog or Palomaria and miniature lotus are just some flowers growing in some parts of the Philippines including Cabanatuan City in the province of Nueva Ecija.
The Katuray (katurai) is a flowering plant that is edible with some folkloric uses that are typical in the Philippine culture. It has white or pink crescent-shaped flowers and seed pods similar to string beans. All the parts of this plant, namely the flowers, roots, bark, and leaves have different properties. Foer example, the leaves are laxative and diuretic while the flowers are emollient. Palomaria has the scientific name Calophyllum inophyllum. It also goes by the name Alexandrian laurel among others. Its flowers have a pleasant smell, and the leaves have a decorative appearance. The seeds of this flower are medicinal and are also for hair care. Lotus flowers, no matter how dark and murky the pond or swamp it lives in, is still beautiful and symbolic. In fact, it is a significant flower to the ancient Egyptians as depicted in hieroglyphics. In Hinduism and Buddhism, it represents spirituality, innocence, and purity.
