Dacawi flowers or Callistemon (bottlebrush), Acanthaceae flowers such as tuberoses and rosy rain lilies and sunflowers are just some of the flowering plants locally grown in Baguio.
Dacawi or bottlebrush flowers are favorite additions to the garden. They are given the name because of its shape. The flower is made up of spikes that come around during the spring and summer, and the stalks that hold the pollen on its tips. Bottlebrush trees grow up to 15 ft and often get visits from birds and insects. The Acanthaceae flower family’s existence dates back to millions of years and has medicinal properties. Tuberoses are highly fragrant and are processed as perfumes since the 17th century. Rosy rain lilies, however, are toxic and causes convulsions and even death. Sunflowers represent faith and adoration. They have a radar-like feature called heliotropism that enables them to determine and follow the position of the sun in the sky. African tulips are a different kind of flower and are not actual tulips. They belong to the Spathodea genus and are flowering trees native to the African continent. It’s among the list of invasive species, but that doesn’t stop people from using its flowers as a float decoration during the Flower Festival.
