The 'kalachuchi' or plumeria is exceptionally fragrant at night and often connected to the supernatural and grown at cemeteries. It was first brought to the Philippines from Mexico by Spaniards on an expedition. Some species are under research for their medicinal properties, and some are for ornamental use only. The flowers, bark, and latex all have properties used for different ailments. It is also mostly associated with funerals and superstitions involving the dead.
