Shinjuku Gyoen

Shinjuku Gyoen park is one of the most popular parks in Tokyo. As one of the city’s largest parks it is located near the Shinjuku Station. It is made up of 3 different garden sections, plus the greenhouse.

There is a classical English garden, a formal French garden and a traditional Japanese garden. The greenhouse supports tropical and subtropical plants and flowers from around the world so visitors can examine the great diversity of botanical throughout every season of the year. All of the gardens are meticulously maintained scattered with a wide variety of flowers that makes a true oasis of tranquility and beauty in an otherwise particularly busy district within Tokyo.

The Classical English Garden

The English landscaped gardens feature typical open, wide, green, grass lawns that are completely surrounded by a border of flowering cherry trees. Relax in the shade, or picnic in the sun in this classical English garden section.

The Formal French Garden

The formal garden planted in the French style is a symmetrically arranged, orderly area, demonstrating the foundation of formal French landscape design. Since French formal gardens are supposed to be viewed from a distance the form plays a key role. The cool colour palette of white, green, blue and purple flowers offset the stone paving, edging and elements of decor to delight the eye from any angle of view.

The Traditional Japanese Garden

The oldest section of the park is a traditional Japanese garden area. Large ponds, islands and bridges all come together to create the traditional garden typical of the Japanese for centuries. The Kyu Goryotei or the Taiwan Pavilion is in this section of the grounds. It was built specifically for the wedding of the Showa Emperor.

Each year, in November, the chrysanthemum exhibit blooms in the Japanese garden section. Huge displays of flowers are located throughout the grounds in large, temporary pavilions for the enjoyment of all.

In case the gardens are not enough, there are several buildings for services that include a restaurant, the information centre and a gallery of local art.

Shinjuku Gyoen park does not lose its charm as the temperatures cool off in the autumn. Fall colours as the leaves change are a particular delight. There are many different types of trees that have an autumn colour display, but the large numbers of maple trees make a particularly impressive sight from the middle of November to the middle of December.

Shinjuku Gyoen park is an oasis of calm and tranquility with lawns and flowers available all year round for tourists and locals.
