Miyakonojō has plenty of interesting sights and things to do, including dozens of pretty temples and shrines such as the Ganzo-ji Temple and the Kanbashira-gu Shrine. The local museum is worth a visit, as is the planetarium. For those who want to see flowers in Miyakonojo then there is plenty of choice in and around the city area. The Hayamizu Park is perhaps the best place to start. Known amongst locals for its displays of beautiful irises and bursts of yellow flowers, the park is also a pleasant place to visit in cherry blossom season and has some lovely ponds along which you can stroll. Kanbashira Park is another pleasant place in which to check out the beautiful cherry blossoms. Here, in the spring months when the cherry trees are at their finest, it is customary to grab a bento box or small picnic and spend some time under the trees watching the beautiful blossoms fall.
