For flower lover’s Ajo is an amazing location for wildflower spotting. The Ajo Mountain Drive is perhaps one of the best scenic routes in the region for checking out flowers. Covering 21 miles of terrain in the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the poppy displays are simply breathtaking, as are the collections of lupines and tack stem. Nearby, head back towards Phoenix and stop off at the wonderful Desert Botanic Garden for its great displays of cacti, guided tours and workshops and over 20,000 different species of native plants, shrubs and flowers. There is also a lovely desert wildflower trail, and an interesting Centre for Desert Living, so it is worth the trip through the desert to catch up with the displays in this popular open air museum.
At just under 2 hours’ drive from Phoenix, Ajo is an interesting place to stop if you are travelling around Arizona. If you can, try to take a day trip here in order to really experience the desert landscape. This beautiful old town has real untouched charm and is famous for having only one traffic light! The gorgeous town plaza is perhaps Ajo’s best feature, complete with beautiful arches and tall palms creating an elegant colonial vibe. The Ajo Historical Society Museum is the place to head to soak up all of the history of the area, including details on the villages mining past. Others prefer to partake in hiking, wildflower exploration and mountain biking in the wild desert landscape. There is also a quaint farmer’s market held twice monthly, lots of other celebrations and events, and of course stargazing in the evenings at the vast sky above, unspoiled by lights and traffic noise.
