Just outside Nara, Ikoma is a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. Within the city itself the Ikoma Sanjo Theme Park makes for a fantastic day trip for the whole family. The amusement park is located on Mount Ikoma, which is also worth exploring for its’ stunning mountain scenery and views over the surrounding area. The theme park at Ikoma is also a popular flower viewing spot, and visitors will be delighted with lovely displays of moss phlox that blooms in the early spring period. Ikoma is also a mere 20 minutes from Nara-shi and its many attractions, including the Manyo Botanical Garden. This oasis features stunning floral and plant displays throughout the year, however the best views come from the burst of colour from the cherry blossoms and vibrant violet clusters in the spring. In the early summer you will be rewarded with the shock of colour that comes from the gorgeous azalea and the trailing wisteria. The entire city itself is awash with beautiful wisteria in many different hues in early spring. Nara city is also an excellent base for exploring the area – nearby Katsuragi Kodo has one of the most gorgeous azalea displays in Nara for example or you can travel to the Muroji Rhododendron festival in May to enjoy its fabulous display of colours. Finally- and this is not to be missed – a trip along the Lotus Road will take you past three temples and allow you to view over 100 types of lotus flower, as well as the early morning opening of the water lilies.
