As the “Gateway to the Great Barrier” reef one would expect to see a variety of native plants, flowers and animals in Cairns. The city does not disappoint residents with its butterfly sanctuary filled with cuphea and flowering milkweed and the Daintree rainforest with small orchids bloom on the ground surrounded by ferns and anthuriums. Paronella Park is another great place to visit a rainforest and there is also a spectacular waterfall in its borders. Crocodiles can be found at Tinaroo Dam, along with a few other places in Cairns. Along with the tube shaped flowers of the cuphea plants, the city also boasts large clumps of agapanthus and alliums. Jacobian and bottlebrush bushes bloom red in the summer, and there are even a few red, orange and yellow ixoras. In the rainforest one can also find several types of palms, along with elephant ears and red ti leaves. Pink boleros bloom in planned gardens next to small sago and queen palms. Roses are also popular with Cairns residents, especially the hardy hybrids. In the spring one can also find tulips, along with a few daffodils and even a hardy crocus. Many of these flowers can also be purchased at the open air markets.
