The second-largest city in Denmark, Århus, also spelled as Aarhus, had its beginnings in the 8th century as a Viking settlement. In more modern times, Aarhus is known for its music scene. In the 1950s, jazz music exploded in popularity, and as the decades went on, rock and roll and other genres began increasing in popularity. Jazz is so popular in Aarhus that there is an annual jazz festival: the Aarhus International Jazz Festival is an eight-day event held every year, in July, August, or September. Most of the jazz sets are performed at the Aarhus Concert Hall, but some sets and concerts are played outdoors for free. In recent years, the Aarhus Jazz Festival has been focusing on European jazz music, with Polish jazz music in particular increasing in popularity at the festival. Aarhus, while known mainly for its jazz, also has a remarkable number of green oases, including a beautiful botanical garden! The Aarhus Botanical Gardens started in 1873, and contain a wide variety of flora. Another notable green oasis is the Marselisborg Memorial Park. Located at the foot of the Marselisborg Palace, the Marselisborg Memorial Park has gardens full of roses, cherry blossom trees, and sunflowers.
