Machala – also called the Banana Capital of the World – is a coastal city in southwest Ecuador. Machala is important both as a transportation center, and as an economic center for agricultural trade and industry. Bananas, cocoa, and coffee are all major exports of Machala, and the city’s economy relies heavily on bananas especially. As a transportation center, Machala’s importance is in the fact that it is so close to Guayaquil: travelers that head north to Guayaquil make a stop in Machala, and likewise, travelers that head south to Peru also make a stop in Machala. In and around Machala, you can find a variety of orchids as well as a variety of roses.
