Ecuador’s capital, Quito, is famous for three big things: first, for being “la mitad del mundo” or “The Middle of the World.” There are two locations in the world that fall exactly along the equator, and one of them, in Quito, is the Quitsato Sundial. Second, Quito is also known for being built on the eastern side of an active volcano, Pichincha Volcano. Third, Quito is the current headquarters of the Union of South American Nations, a continental union representing 12 South American countries (Alphabetically: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela). The Quito Botanical Gardens excellently demonstrate the natural beauty of Ecuador and South America, with flowers like orchids, roses (Ecuador’s national flower), hibiscus, among many others.
