Where Estonia’s capital, Tallinn, is considered to be very important in a financial/political sense, Tartu is considered to have the same importance in an intellectual sense: the University of Tartu is the oldest university in Estonia, and is one of the oldest in Europe as a whole. The University of Tartu also runs a botanical garden, which has multiple greenhouses, sourcing flowers from nations and environments all over the world. Among the astonishing number of flowers, one can find orchids, bromeliads, and lianas in the subtropical greenhouses, cornflowers (Estonia’s national flower) in other greenhouses, and many more. The multiple houses include the Palm house, focusing on palm trees, the Subtropical house, focusing on flora sources from subtropical regions, and the Succulent house, hosting plants known for surviving in dry conditions.
