Home to the ancient abbey where King Henry I is said to be buried, the town of Reading has plenty of historic sights for visitors and residents to wander through. Basildon Park boasts a stunning rose garden and the Museum of English Rural Life is dedicated to farming. The large township is also home to Forbury Gardens where visitors can enjoy ice skating in the winter and live concerts in the warmer months. There are several skillfully designed flower beds that change throughout the year and visitors are encouraged to wander through the gardens before stopping at the estate’s nurseries. In the spring petunias can be found in the beds, along with yellow marigolds and red wax begonias. The summer is when the red and white roses burst into bloom, along with phlox and verbena. Dusty Miller, cosmos, columbine and dark red coleus make a striking combination. One can also find daisies, purple cornflowers, dahlias and anemones blooming in the gardens. The Thames path takes visitors along the river where they can catch a glimpse of sunflowers, carnations and other wildflowers in the meadows, and purple irises growing at the water’s edge.
