Located approximately 100 kilometers north of Liberia’s capital of Monrovia, Bopolu is the capital of the Gbarpolu County in which it is located, and was also known for once being the site of the rich Kondo Federation. Ivory and gold were traded for guns and tobacco during this time. These days, Bopolu is best known for its agricultural specializations, and one can find rice fields, tapioca cultivation spots, and piper nigrum – or black pepper – throughout the town. The Gbarpolu County is also known for the fact that it contains the Gola National Forest, which was established in the year 1960.
