Huge Swarm of Bees flying past the Blackburn Market and The Mall

Several local residents reported seeing a huge swarm of honeybees fly past the Blackburn Market, and the mall. They took videos with their phones, and pictures with phones and cameras. Although there are no flowers to be found in that area, the swarm of bees appears to be relocating their hive. It took about 15 minutes for the swarm to pass by the Blackburn Market area in the afternoon.

Honey bees will swarm in the summer to leave their nest, and go to another one. Although it looks quite dangerous, and can be somewhat loud with all the buzzing, there is very little danger from a swarm of bees. The bees are not hungry and they are not defending their young, nor their food supplies. They divide up because they have so much food, and the flowers are providing so much nectar and pollen. They end up with a rapid increase in the number of the worker bees, in the nice summer weather. These worker bees then eat lots of honey, then all take off together, full, happy and a bit drowsy.

It’s hard to say exactly how many honey bees were in the swarm in Blackburn. Swarms can be as small as 2,000 bees and as big as 30,000 bees. How long they spend together depends on how far they are travelling, which is based on where they can find more flowers and other pollen and nectar sources. They send out scouts ahead of the swarm to check for a good spot.

Remember, swarming is a good thing. It means the weather is nice, there’s lots of flowers and other bee food sources, and that the numbers of bees are increasing.
